Initiated in Yaoundé in 2010, Mokolo is a collaborative web portal and a tool to raise awareness of African cinemas. It is funded by the ACP Fund and the Goethe-Institut. The German Foreign Ministry is in advanced discussions with the Goethe Institute to support this project at least three years. The Mokolo Foundation is the institution that provides the project management; it is based in Lagos, the former capital of Nigeria.
On 30 and 31 May, the Mokolo Foundation gave itself a rendez-vous in Dakar, Senegal, to take stock of its action (pending its General Assembly in the coming months), allow the meeting between the three organs of management (Board of Trustees, Executive Committee, management Team) and officially launch in the Senegalese capital website www.mokolo.net.
Overseen by a Board of Directors (Board of Trustees), the Executive Committee has recruited a management team to execute this project (at pan-African in collaboration with German professionals). This is a portal where any movie buff can, on African films, find information on movies / festivals / professional, discussion forums, video on demand (VoD). It also allows professionals to contact and to work together. In summary, it took the name of the central market in Yaounde, this is not only because the founding act was cast in Cameroon, it is because Mokolo’s ambition is to be like an open market for socialising (discussion forums, respond to choice of moviegoers), procurement (movies) to keep abreast of the news.
The Board of Directors (Board of Trustees) consists of the Nigerian director Tunde Kelani (Chairman), director Chika Anadu (absent in Dakar) and the director of the Goethe-Institut in Lagos, Marc-André Schmachtel. As for the Executive Committee, it meets fifteen African and European professionals (France / Germany). Beninese Espera Donouvossi is the Team Manager of a team based in Lagos, the Foundation’s headquarters. Mokolo project partners are in several African countries: Kenya, Senegal, Cameroon, and in Germany.
Secretary General of the Pan African Federation of Filmmakers (FEPACI), the Malian director Cheick Oumar Sissoko made the trip to Dakar as well as Khalil Demmoun, President of the African Federation of Film Critics (FACC, Dakar) or Idrissou Mora-Kpaï, Benin filmmaker, to participate alongside other professionals in Mokolo meeting. The press has responded, as well as many professionals in Senegal: directors, producers, film critics and designers (such Angèle Diabang also President of the Society of collective management of copyright, Jo Guy Ramaka, Baba Diop, Fatou Kine Sene, Moussa Sene Absa, Ismael Thiam, Demba Dia Amadou Ndiaye Kangal, Adama Kane, Diatta Djitome ….), and institutions such as Romain Masson (Audiovisual Attaché Embassy of France), Moustapha Samb (head of the Cinema at the French Institute).
