(Ecofin Service) – In South Africa, pressure is growing on the SABC, the public broadcaster, whose leaders still refuse to cover the violent public demonstrations. A petition calling for advertisers to boycott the SABC has indeed been launched online.
The text of the petition is: “More and more organisations and political parties are in agreement with us to condemn what is happening at the SABC. But the situation is rapidly deteriorating. More and more journalists are suspended and censorship becomes evident. This requires a new approach. Ask advertisers to stop supporting censorship in the SABC.” The application wants to be more precise and request expressly to certain customers of the SABC to stop cooperation with the broadcaster. These are Clientele Life business, Black Label, FNB, Vodacom and Chicken Licken.
The petition was published on the website of the organisation Amandla.mobi. The latter explains ignoring who the author is, but indicates that 772 emails were sent to support the petition. Furthermore, the request has already been liked more than 1000 times on Facebook. In addition to the petition, there is also the voice of the bishops’ conference of Southern Africa, which is now concerned about the ongoing crisis at the SABC, although the company’s top management still refuses to admit it. Bishops call for the intervention of the South African Parliament.
It is expected that the SABC that responds formally to the decision of the Independent Communications Authority. It has ordered the broadcaster to resume coverage of all events in the country, without exception. Pca The SABC said that justice could be brought against the decision of the regulator.
