The storytelling sessions at Tarifa-Tangier African film festival programme are special times for children who take good advantage from these occasions experienced in a rhythmic atmosphere of laughter and applause.
According to the Cameroonian storyteller Boniface Ofogo behind this parallel activity “Espace scolaire” (School Space), the initiative of the organisers is very popular with children.
“The festival organisers have had the very good idea of creating this school space in which it is not only about screenings but also about making Spanish children travel to Africa while being told stories by a storyteller invited to this end,” he said.
“Espace scolaire” is the educational side of the FCAT working with schools to sensitise young audiences to the diverse Africa’s realities through film as a tool for development and for an education based on values.
For the Cameroonian, this “ancient art” is unfortunately endangered due to the breakthrough of new information and communications technology.
“Nowadays, there is more tradition to sit in the evening around a campfire to tell stories and we notice more and more distance between young and old,” regretted Ofogo who believes that wisdom transmission between young and old is interrupted.
He thus called for the preservation of this heritage through the creation of African storytelling festivals on the continent.
“Our African countries should promote spaces where one gives voice to elders so that they can pass on their wisdom to younggenerations through the culture of the imagination,” he said, suggesting festivals of stories in countries that do not necessarily have an oral tradition, including France, Spain and Latin America.
The other parallel activities of the festival include the “l’Arbre à palabres”, “les Apéritifs de cinéma ,” “Les Nuits du Festival”, “Espace musical (Musical Space)”, exhibitions and radio workshop.
Opened on May 26 in Tangier in Morocco and Tarifa the next day in the Andalusian province of Cadiz in Spain, the Film Festival of Tarifa-Tangier (FCAT) ends on Saturday.
