The film meetings of Hergla, the Tunisian coastal town beloved by filmmaker Roberto Rossellini, have reached their 11th edition. The festival presents African and Mediterranean films on September 3-7. The event includes short films, movies and documentaries that are in contrast with the commercial spirit of the industry in favor of more authentic film experiences focusing on the African and Med areas. Some 30 movies will be screened over five days, focusing on a variety of themes: the 120th anniversary of cinema, the centennial of WWI (which also involved citizens from African countries), collective memory, borders and mutations experienced by southern countries, the history of women as told by women and ecology. Guest of honor of the 11th edition of the event will be Syrian filmmaker Mohamed Malas, author of ”On the beach under the sun” and ”the dream” whose movie ”Lights and shadows” from 1996 will open the festival in an homage to the event’s theme – memory and cinema from the south saving reality from oblivion.
Another guest of honor is Palestinian Rashid Maasharavi with ”Les petites ailes”, ”Arafat, mon frère” and ”Lettres de Yarmouk”.
South Africa’s Chris Austin will be a special guest with his movies on apartheid, ”South Africa belongs to us” and ”Not a bad girl”.
Also scheduled is a concert on the screening of Tunisian pioneer Albert-Semama Chickli ”Ain El Ghazel”
Laboratories for Tunisian up-and-coming filmmakers have also been scheduled along with an event for never-screened films for Tunisian film schools.
The town of Sayada will also host, on the sidelines of the meetings, on September 8, the screening of ”Tahar Cheriaa in the shadow of the baobab”, a film presented this year by Tunisian filmmaker Mohamed Challouf paying homage to the pioneer and militant of Tunisian and African cinema from Sayada in Sahel.
The events of Hergla are organized by cultural association Africa Mediterranean and the association Hergla Moustakbal under the patronage, among others, of the Tunisian culture ministry.
