The biggest winner that night was Dilman Dila’s Felista’s Fable which bagged the Best Feature Film, Male Actor and Screen Play.
Now, the third edition that was launched with a carnival march last week is upon us. Aptly themed ‘Celebrating Quality of Ugandan Film,’ the four-day event is intended at shining a light on an industry that many locals barely know exists.
Once again this year, UFF partners with Wananchi Group’s home entertainment and communication brand Zuku TV who will be involved in awareness campaigns to both the public and film-makers about their involvement in local film.
Jared Mokobo, the general manager, Zuku TV Uganda, notes that the East African film industry has a potential of generating more than Shs 150 billion if it is effectively promoted.
“The region can realise greater economic benefits as a result of a vibrant film industry,” he says.
Last week, a full list of nominees at this year’s festival were announced. As expected, Boda Boda Thieves, which has already rocked film festivals in Berlin and Durban, leads the pack with a nomination in the best actor, supporting actor, sound, feature film of the year.
The film’s lead actor Spike Insingoma is highly expected to eclipse his co-nominees for his portrayal as Abel. He’s nominated alongside co-star Michael Wawuyo. The surprise nomination was Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine whose performance received mixed reactions since much of it was not worth writing home about.
Throughout this year, film-makers expressed their dissatisfaction with UCC over unfulfilled pledges like enforcing the 70 per cent local content on TV and not limiting the ever increasing influx of foreign films in our cinemas and libraries.
To this, Godfrey Mutabazi, executive director UCC, says they are working with broadcasters to see that TVs give priority to locally produced content “We are just starting but we are also targeting cinemas,” Mutabazi said.
The festival will see over a hundred local films screen in Cinemas like Cineplex, Cinemax, New Century and Cinema Magic among others. The award gala night will be held at Serena hotel next week.
